Relationship Advice #161
How Old Are You?
If you didn’t know how old you were, how old would you be?
One of the problems that many couples face as their relationship moves into it’s later years is the fact that all of us are getting older. There is a difference between getting old and growing old. None of us can stop the relentless calendar as it moves us one day at a time, day after day into our later (senior…for some of us anyway) years.
I believe that it is vital that individuals keep their youthful outlook and spirit as they add wrinkles and yes, any number of aches and pains to their life as they pass through their years. So, how old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? Have you retained that youthful outlook and not lost hope for better times and fun in the future as you move forward with your partner?
I have met people in their 20’s who act as if they are 80 and I know many people in their 70’s and 80’s who still have the mind, attitudes and desires of a 20 year old. What’s the difference? It is realizing that each of us are many ages. Each of us are a certain age:
- spiritually
- mentally
- emotionally
- physically
- chronologically
- sexually
- and so on.
How old are you in each of these categories?
I know that due to the passage of years I may be close to 60, but mentally I still have:
- the curiosity of a 5 year old.
- the life outlook of a 10 year old
- the hopes and desires of a 20 year old
- the intellectual desires of a 30 year old
- the spiritual needs of a 40 year old
- the career and financial desires of a 50 year old
- and yes the aches of a 70 year old
So what does all of this have to do with relationships? Think about it…if you see yourself as “old” and your partner sees himself/herself as “young” regardless of your respective ages I am sure you can imagine the impact this will have on every aspect of your relationship.
