What is True Submission?

Submission is a word in America that is looked upon as weak. Our counter culture has said that we are individuals and that we should not submit to anyone.

I think it is important to see what the Bible says about submission and to understand what it means before we throw it out.

Lets start with the verse that liberalist have hated.

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Eph 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Unfortunately us men have misinterpretted this verse. It is fair to say that other than John 3:16 this verse is the mostly wide known verse by unbelievers. Many woman have been hurt by this verse because they did understand submission but they did not understand the verse of scripture. If men kept on reading they would see:

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

We men have thought that women should submit to us but we have been given the harder job and we are to give our lives for their sake. I believe this is what true leadership is. To lay down you life for the sake to better someone elses.

We see in Eph 5:20-21 That we are supposed to be "Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God."

Submission is a two way street. Even Christ will submit to us when we will not follow His will yet he allows us to do our own thing. We see that God was willing to give the Isrealites divorce even though it was not His will. If God is willing to submit to us then we should be willing to submit before God.

Some of us say that we do submit to God but true submission is more than that. It is not submission when God asks you to go and move to Hawaii and you say YEAH!!!! True submission is trust. God will ask us to do things that we do not want to do but submission is doing them even when we dont agree with them.

I have found this is a principle that deep relationships are based off. You can not have a lasting relationship without true mutual submission. Submission is a beautiful thing and it is something that should be embrased in our lives. Culture has told us today that we should be individuals but I believe that our identity should be in Christ. To identify to Christ is to submit to Him. Ask youself if you have had true submission before the Lord. Ask yourself if you have had true submission with those close to you in your life that God has placed there?

Great job Tim......You are absolutely true. I think that is the main reason why in these days relationship doesn't work for long..we don't fully submitted to each other. How God can show His glory, if I don't submit to HIM fully.
