Default Success is a Process

Life Success Tips #219
Success is a Process

“There is more to life than increasing its speed.” Gandhi

Many success gurus have been professing for years that success is a journey and not a destination. This would seem to imply that this is a journey that everyone can ultimately take and reach a desired destination. I would agree that the purpose of a journey is a destination but I would also ask you to consider the following:
  • What if you decide during your journey that you are traveling in the wrong direction?
  • What if you decide to just pick a spot out on the journey and not travel any further?
  • What if you get to your destination and it is a disappointment at best?
  • What if you have a health or personal issue that prevents you from continuing on your journey?
Do all of these imply that you are not successful unless you keep moving forward?

The concept of success generally implies – bigger, more, better, sooner, faster or easier.

Success is really a process of becoming not getting or achieving. I could give you thousands of examples of people in all walks of life who have achieved great success but would most likely not make it into the yearbook of the rich and famous. Who are these people?
  • It is the mother who has raised caring, loving, responsible and educated children.
  • It is the manager who year after year contributes to the development of his or her employees.
  • It is the salesperson who helps a customer solve a difficult problem.
  • It is the teacher who shapes young minds for lives of responsibility and maturity.
  • It is the minister, priest or rabbi who helps turn a life around.
  • It is the volunteer who gives their time and energy to total strangers.
  • It is the _____________ you fill in the blank – who makes a positive impact in the world.
Success is a process of becoming a more spiritual, caring, knowledgeable human being. It is not about a bigger bank balance, fame or power.

Everyone has heard of Donald Trump. Is he a success? It depends on what criteria you choose to use to define success. Is he more successful than Mother Teresa? Sure he may have more money and his own TV show but in the end who will make a bigger more positive impact on the lives of others? I’ll let you decide.

Success is not a comparison of you or your status to others. Success is what you are doing with your life – period. It is what you are contributing. What you are learning and then how you are sharing what you have learned.

I guarantee that at least one person reading this has by now worked themselves into a real frenzy and is getting ready to click on the – remove me from this newsletter button. But before you do, I would like to leave you with one thought. What will be your final words on your death bed?
  • I should have worked harder.
  • I should have made more money.
  • I should have traveled more.
  • I was famous and powerful.
  • I was wealthy.
  • Or, _____________
I helped a lot of people find happiness, peace, success and love during my life’s journey.

A legacy of service will be remembered far longer than what you were worth financially when you have passed on to your final reward.

So, today, is it the number of dollars you put in the bank that counts or the number of heartbeats that you get that is really important?

Let’s keep things in perspective here folks.
